If you’ve ever been to a Dueling Piano show at a bar, you may be aware of some of the language and content that gets thrown around. Having been a full time player for a local Wichita bar for nearly 5 years, I’m very aware of that type of show. If that’s the kind of performance you’re looking for, a bar is probably the best place for it.
When we do our dueling piano shows for your fundraiser, birthday party, corporate event or whatever it may be, I can tell you that we rarely go beyond PG-13. Honestly, I don’t even like to go beyond PG-13 at these events even if you want us to! It’s really about reading the crowd. When stepping into a bar I think the people deciding to go to said bar are making a conscious decision to do so being aware of content that can take place between 9pm and 1:30am. It’s like they are stepping into the bar world. In our mobile dueling piano show, we are stepping into your world.
At private parties we are doing these days most of our shows start between 7pm and 8pm and are usually done by 10pm. The people attending are there to be entertained and support whatever cause or office party they’ve been invited to.
Sometimes people will request songs that have overly foul language. I call these the “let’s see if they’ll play this” requests. Depending on where we are and what’s going on we might play it but edit out a lot of the harsh content, sometimes it is actually more entertaining that way! It’s not the person who requested the song’s reputation on the line, for the most part they are anonymous… it’s HiFi Production’s reputation. I want to be known as a company that provides an excellent time, can get a bit edgy but doesn’t go too far by being vulgar for the sake of being vulgar.
All that being said: Are we playing in a family environment? Well, we can easily keep everything PG and we will. Are we playing at an event at night with alcohol for adults only? We might explore the fullest extent of going PG-13. Side note: Did you know you can use the “F” word once in PG-13 movies? It’s true! So be on the lookout for that one F bomb (or not?).
Generally speaking our shows are pretty clean and we’re not too interested in taking them to the R rating. Trust me when I say we can put on a great show without having to use too much or any profanity. If content is of any concern, I’m always open to having that discussion with the client.
