During our preparation phone call for a wedding I had last weekend, the bride expressed that she was very nervous about her family and her groom’s family dancing. She told me neither she or the groom were big dancers and that their family wasn’t either. Was there anything I could do to help get people on the dance floor?
There are several factors you can do to have a successful open dance floor time such as hiring a good wedding DJ, leaning more heavily on line dances and slow dances if needed, putting your DJ square in front of the dance floor, having alcohol as an option for guests, and dim lighting on the dance floor. However, there is one simple thing that seems to help more than anything else… Any guesses before the big reveal?
Having the wedding couple on the dance floor is definitely the biggest contributor to an awesome open dance time! If having lots of people out partying is something that is important to you as the bride and groom, please lead by example!
People at your wedding are going to look to you two as the leaders and they genuinely want to be around you and have fun with you on your wedding day! If you’re outside all night or sitting in a corner with your friends, trust me, your dance floor will suffer. Think about this: Nobody wants to see an empty dance floor and just the bride and groom out there by themselves do they? Your friends and family will definitely join in!
I’m not saying that you need to be out there 100% of the time, but make it a priority to spend a decent amount of the party time out there shakin’ it! After all, you’ve hired a DJ and you want things to be poppin’ right?
We had a few things working against us for this recent wedding where the bride and groom were nervous about people dancing. 1. It was on a Sunday and 2. There was no alcohol… BUT at a time when the dance floor was dead, the bride and groom bravely went out there. I put on the Cha Cha Slide so they had something they were familiar with and knew what to do and everybody quickly joined in. After that, they stayed out there and we had a pretty decent turnout for the rest of the evening. I’m so glad they listened to my advice of taking initiative and at the end of the night they told me that they were too.
